Radiofrecuencia en Medicina Estética: aplicación a la diatermia regenerativa. Revisión bibliográfica 2000-2008

Autores/as: Bg. Ana Vidal - Dr. Sebastián Sendrós - Dr. Raúl Pinto

Radiofrequency is a widely used technology in beauty care. This work reviews the existing literature on radiofrequency's applications in this field. We have covered all articles published on the issue between 2000 and 2008 in the bibliographic databases Pubmed, ScinceDirect and the Cochrane Plus Library.
Among the radiofrequency techniques used in beauty care, Capacitive / Resistive Monopolar Radiofrequency or regenerative diathermy (Indiba System) is one of the most commonly used ones because it is effective, safe and innocuous.
Regenerative diathermy is defined as an internal temperature transformation caused by a harmless high relative frequency energy (between 0.45 and 0.6 MHz), where each cell of the tissue receives part of this energy and transforms it into temperature going from the inside to out.
This technique has been used for more than 25 years in facial and corporal treatments with satisfactory outcomes. Its activity is the result a double action mechanism that differs from the classical hyperthermia methods with which it has been commonly identified. One of the two mechanisms is temperature dependent (thermal effects) and the other is independent from temperature (non thermal effects), both mechanisms are complementary and reinforce each other in beauty treatments.
In facial treatments, regenerative diathermy has been used to improve facial expression lines, periorbital rhytids and to reduce wrinkles. In body therapies, it has been used for general reaffirmation, anti cellulite and liposculpture treatments. In most cases, there has been no evidence of adverse effects or the need for a post-treatment recovery period.
In this article, we review the works published to date in relation to the technique's action mechanism - in a histological and molecular level - and their application in the field of beauty care through radiofrequency devices. Several recent studies provide in-depth knowledge of the technique's action mechanism. These studies will surely contribute to improve its application bases and therefore the technique itself.
